The gai (cow) is sacred to Hindus as it represents Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. It is believed that guides the souls of the departed to the gates of Heaven. Gai Jatra is an occasion for satire, jokes and colorful parades.
That day, Sapar, families who have lost a member during the year, a parade of decorated cows around town. The celebration in Bhaktapur is the most interesting. High contraptions of bamboo, wrapped in cloth and topped with straw horns are carried around the city in memory of the dead. Some proceed along the route of making dance festival Ghentang Ghisi. Children dressed as cows, sadhus and other whimsical characters of all sorts fill the streets.
